Our Review of the Valco Tri Mode Twin double stroller

Select Fashions On Clearance for $659.99! Regularly priced at $699.99. Save $40

With a price that reflects its quality, The Valco Tri-Mode Twin Stroller doubles the amount parent-oriented conveniences that have made Valco strollers such a success. Due to a wealth of celebrity endorsements, the Tri-Mode has garnered plenty of public attention . . . and it's not just hype. In terms of storage space, rider comfort, car seat compatibility, and unique features, the Valco Tri-Mode Twin is among the very best in feature-loaded swivel wheel all terrain double strollers. Its closest competitors are the Mountain Buggy Urban Double and Phil and Teds Twin, but the Valco has a number of distinct advantages over both of those 'urban' double strollers.

Standout Features:

  • Two Zippered, removable diaper bags
  • Perforated footplate
  • Reflective Harness Webbing
  • AIRGO Airflow system
  • One touch seat recline
  • Zippered basket access in rear
  • One touch brake

What sets that Valco Tri-Mode Twin apart from the competition?

The advantages to owning a Tri-Mode Twin are in the details . . . there is so much offered by this stroller in terms of parent convenience and comfort (for as many as three riders!) that it's actually difficult to get it all together in just a few short paragraphs, but we'll do our best.

The question is: what properties give the Valco Tri-Mode Twin an advantage over its competitors? The answer: all sorts of things.

The Tri Mode Twin is lighter, narrower, and has a much higher seat back than either the Phil and Teds Twin or the Mountain Buggy Urban Double?meaning mobility, more comfort for taller kids, and the promise of extended usefulness. The long list of compatible infant car seats, via brand-specific optional adapters, make the Valco double stroller an invaluable parental accessory that can be used from you first child's birth onward. Valco also offers an innovative toddler seat that adds a third passenger, an option that neither the Mountain Buggy Urban Double nor the Phil and Teds Twin offer.

Unlike the Mountain Buggy Urban Double (which has fewer compatible car seat options) the Valco Tri-Mode Twin has individually adjustable sun canopies to meet your kid's shade preferences. It also comes with a rain cover.

Why is this stroller called the "Tri-Mode"?

Valco has devised a unique swivel wheel system that can be set to three separate "modes." The first is full 360-degree orientation for total maneuverability in tight spaces, like department stores or busy sidewalks. The second mode is 45-degrees of forward mobility, which allows for tighter tracking on long walks where tight turns aren't as common. The third mode fixes the front wheel forward for better control on trails and rugged terrain?even on a light jog. Valco recommends the 45-degree mode for use with the toddler seat attachment.

What parent-oriented conveniences does the Valco Tri Mode Twin offer?

The Valco Tri Mode Twin stroller is loaded with storage space: a huge underside basket, auxiliary pockets on the sides of the basket, and two removable storage bags that can be unzipped and hung on the handles for easy access the diapers, bottles, and other parental necessities. By removing the diaper bags located on the backs of the seats, you open up large ventilating windows that let the breeze flow through the seat to cool off your passengers.

The handle bar of the Tri-Mode Twin is height adjustable, and the one step-braking mechanism adds another dimension of safety. The new footplate above the wheels is perforated so that water and grime from the little one's shoes doesn't pool up, and the plate can be easily rinsed clean. A one touch seat recline, similar to Baby Joggers 'pinch and slide' mechanism, makes dropping or raising the seats a snap. There is also Valco's range of car seat adaptors available that make the Tri Mode Twin compatible with Graco, Peg Perego, and Britax infant car seats?though only one adaptor can be used at a time.

Accessories Included with the Valco Tri-Mode Twin:

  • Rain Cover
  • Tire Pump
  • Head Hugger infant seat inserts

The Bottom Line: The wide range of conveniences offered by the Australian-made Valco Tri-Mode Twin explains its rather high price point, but this upper-echelon stroller has so much to offer that the price should not be a deterrent. Again, compared to other double strollers offered for about the same price (namely the Mountain Buggy Urban Double and Phil and Teds Twin) the conveniences and options presented by the Valco Tri-Mode Twin set it above the others, by far.

The Tri-Mode Twin is an exceptionally parent-friendly double stroller with long-term usability and a concentration on rider comfort.

Good Stoller But Expensive

Reviewer: Anonymous , New Orleans, LA Date: September 23, 2008
Overall nice stroller but with some flaws. Pros: 1)Fits through standard doors. 2)Good amount of storage 3)Sunshades are adequate and are very adjustable. 4)Looks good (we got Scarlet) 5)Lots of accessories for upgrade (We only got the diaper bag but the accessories look nice. I don't know if they will be practical and pan out but they are available.) 6)I like the aluminum footplate and think it will be durable 7)I like the belly bar for the kids because I don't always strap the older ones in. I won't buy a stroller that doesn't have one. I don't like the ajustable feature. When the kids climb over it the locking mechanism fails and it moves. 8)Overall this stroller appears to be well made. Cons: 1)Poor instructions. Doesn't explain the features well. Also, is based on a previous model so most of the instructions (especially for the rear axle assembly) don't apply. They instructions seem to be an afterthought. 2)Adjustable handle. Sounds good but is not. If the stroller is loaded and you need to lift the front wheels to get up a curb then the handle will fail. The locking mechanism is not strong enough to use the handle to push down and get the front wheels up with kids in it. 3)Stroller folding. It is fairly easy to fold but has 3 problems. First, it is sort of a hassle to unfold it. Second, you can't leave anything in the bottom storage when you fold it. Everything will fall out. Also, there could be a handle to pick the stroller up with while it is folded. 4)Price. Expensive stroller. 5)Rolls well but not as easy to push as our Instep Safari. 6)Not sure how well the locking mechanism for the sunshades will hold up (connecting the shades to the stroller). Adjusting the sunshades puts a lot of stress on these and when assembling the stroller I had a hard time getting the sunshades to stay locked in place. In conclusion: Well built but some of the adjustable features are not necessary and will probably break in the future. For the money you cannot beat the InStep Safari. The only problems my wife has with that stroller are that it is difficult to get through some doors and the sunshade doesn't fold down far enough to protect the kids when the sun is in front of the stroller. But you can buy 3 InStep Safari's for the price of one Valco Baby Twin Trimode.

The Jury is Still Out

Reviewer: Anonymous , San Diego, CA Date: August 08, 2008
I have wanted the Valco Tri Mode double stroller for about 1 1/2 years because of the toddler seat accessory . I have 1 yr old twin boys and a 4 year old daughter. I wanted to be able to take them all for daily walks. I finally got my husband on board and we received the stroller about a month ago. It seems very solid and sturdy, has pockets and storage galore, and my boys seem to ride comfortably in it. I wish the sun shades provided better coverage like on the BOB strollers we looked at. It is very heavy compared to our INSTEP jogging stroller . We had it for 2 days and the left rear tire tubing blew a huge hole in it. So we only used it twice and then had to wait a week for Valco to send us extra tubing. Valco sent us a replacement tubing and an extra free of charge due to the circumstances. We were glad they send us an extra because one of the replacements was leaking as soon as we put it on. We replaced the tubing a second time and have been successfully using the stroller for about two weeks with no other problems. The jury is still out because my toddler seat is on back order and I haven't used it yet with all three kids riding. This is why I wanted the Valco stroller over other strollers on the market that were less expensive. So in order for me to be really happy with this one, the toddler seat has to live up to my expectations.

Great Stroller!

We purchased the Valco Tri Mode Twin stroller after owning a Mountain Buggy and other doubles. This one is absolutely the most durable, practical and comfortable for the kids. They have thought of everything and you can just buy in confidence!!! Research no further, this is the best stroller out there!

MONSTER of a stroller - definetely luxurious despite numerous pitfalls.

Reviewer: Anonymous , Denver, CO Date: July 29, 2008
The negatives first: This stroller is a MONSTER. The way that it folds does not allow for any easy way to lift it. Lifting it is definetely heavy and awkward. I am 112 lbs, and 5 ft 1 inch tall. But, I've worked out my whole life and consider myself very strong. This is not your everyday, practical, run errands getting in and out of the car stroller. Positives: If you have $670 extra to spend for just an occasional jogger this is for you. It's top notch quality in every way (might be a contributing factor to the weight). Sun canopies are phenomenal. If you can't figure out how to unsnap the bottom part of the canopy to get more coverage your not looking hard enough. Can't beat that there's the option to add a toddler seat, although I've yet to use it. Storage (although limiting in the under compartment with the bar straight through the middle vertically) is plentiful. Removable little "bags" behind each seat, mesh elastic pockets below that, as well as pockets on the sides of the under storage. Very comfortable for the children. Adjustable handlebar has a nice range. The foot plate is useful as a seat for mom in parks and alike, but probably adds 4 or 5 pounds to the weight and it's a bit of a waste. Fit's through most doors nicely. Oh, and there's the WOW factor. Wherever I go, no matter their age... both men and women go out of their way to comment about this stroller. It's kind of like being a celebrity. People will whisper as you walk by! Overall - I think that there is definetely room for improvement on this stroller. And, for the price this stroller should include some kind of parent console and snack tray. But this makes an AMAZING occasional jogger! Just not practical.

Love this stroller!

We bought the Valco Tri Mode Twin stoller for our twin boys and we have been so happy with it! After attempting to get used to the Graco Duoglider we finally had enough of whoever was sitting in the back kicking the one in the front. Also, the Duoglider seats are completly different from each other. With the Valco, both seats are equally padded and comfortable, both recline fully, and both canopies completely shield each child. Our boys have taken several naps in this stroller which was impossible with our other one. This is a heavy stroller (show me a double that isn't) but I am able to get it in and out of our car with no problems. I hesitated to purchase this stroller because of the price but for us, this stroller is worth every penny!

I Love this Stroller!

Reviewer: Erin , West Palm Beach, FL Date: June 18, 2008
After spending 6 days pushing my Peg Perego Twin Aria around Sea World, my husband decided we needed a double stroller with inflated tires. After researching online...we fell in love with it. We recently spent 4 days at Disney and it was so much easier to push than my Peg Perego (which I still love for quick trips. The Valco Baby is a heavy stroller, but we knew that going into it- but it does not push like one. The sunshades are great for our hot Florida sun- the kids can be covered completely. The seats recline very far back and it is easy to do one handed. The tri- mode front wheels make this stroller so versitile- you can lock them to jog or unlock them so you can steer easily around tight areas. It has everything we were looking for in a stroller. I got a double SkipHop bagwhich made the stroller even better since the basket is divided in half by a bar & I love big diaper bags. We also purchased a Carry You Siena Snack Tray- it fits on the middle of the bar & is big enough t0 hold cups & snacks for both girls!

Love this stroller!!

Reviewer: Nicole , Mesa, AZ Date: May 27, 2008
I absolutely love this stroller i just bought it last week, its amazing! it pushes so easy and smooth, and i love everything about it. My sister in law calls it my cadillac of strollers. i talked to another lady who had one who said she even took hers hiking with her. i got this stroller for its versatility, i like that i can use it for anything active but i can also take it to the mall because its nice and not a jogger with a huge bicycle wheel. This is THE stroller to own, i absolutely have no regrets, well except for the price, not fun. other than that it comes with a warranty and everything, and from what i understand this stroller can pretty much hold up to anything, so way worth it!

Great Features, but not the Right Fit For Us

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Florida Date: May 20, 2008
I spent over a year researching double strollers. I was looking for something that I could use for our daily walk/run, for travel & for day long outings (shopping, Disney, the zoo etc). One of the most important features I was looking for was sun coverage since we live in Florida. I decided on the Valco bcs of the rotating sunshades (they just have to be un-velcroed & work as floating canopies), the stylish look, the upright seats & all the storage options. When I received the stroller I loved it. It pushes incredibly well & looks really cool. However, now that our second baby has arrived and we've actually tested it, I'm not happy with our purchase. We have taken it on two daily walks and the front wheels wobbled like a broken grocery cart. My husband messed around with them a bit to see if it could be fixed easily, but couldn't find anything wrong. It's possible that we just got a faulty model, but because I have realized the Valco isn't our perfect stroller, we are returning it & buying the Bob Duallie Ironman instead. When it comes down to it, we really need a good solid walking/running stroller & the Valco doesn't cut it. It's also not a great travel stroller. The fold is big & bulky & I can't imagine trying to bring it through an airport. Not to mention, if I put it in the back of my mid-size SUV, there wouldn't be any room for luggage! We currently have the Bob ironman single & love it for our walks/runs so I think we'll be just as happy w/ the Duallie. I have realized there just isn't one double stroller that can cover all of our needs. But since we will now have a fair share of doubles (Maclaren Triumph, P&T Sport & Bob Duallie Ironman)I think we've got all of our needs covered. I'm sad to be returning the Valco because I do really love it, but I know it's not the right match for us.
