Our Review of the InSTEP Take 2 bike trailer

New from InSTEP for 2007: the InSTEP Take 2 is now available in New Colors.

The InSTEP Take 2 is the most affordable child's bike trailer in the InSTEP lineup. The low price reflects the limited number of frills and special features, but not the overall quality. The Take 2 is just a stripped down bicycle trailer that will roll smoothly on a smooth road, but may not hold up so well under rugged conditions.

With the Take 2, you get an easy-to-fold bike trailer that requires no tools to assemble other than a wrench to attach the coupler plate to your bicycle. After that, attaching the Take 2 to your bicycle is a one step, tools free process. The cab of the Take 2 holds two children totaling 100 pounds, and comes with dual 5-point safety harnesses. The 16" wheels of the Take 2 are "mags" (made from a polycarbonate plastic) so they're lighter than usual, and rust will never be a concern, but they wear over time. The powder coated steel frame is also rustproof in non-seaside conditions, and a waterproof canopy and retractable rain shield help shield your load from the elements.

Bottom Line: The InSTEP Take 2 bike trailer is made for roads and sidewalks, not so hot on the trails. If you're looking for a bicycle trailer that can easily handle unpaved trails or tons of potholes, consider a model like the Schwinn Mark II, a Burley trailer, or a Chariot convertible bike trailer with larger wheels.

THE GOOD: Set up is simple (even right out of the box), built quality is good on the frame, wheels are smooth, enough room for my 2 and 4 year old boys along with cargo space in the back. Average weight based on competitors, the covers since tight with straps (avoiding fabric flap in the wind). The trailer pulls well, I notice a little bit of push-pull when riding at slow speeds, but nothing that will bother anyone IMO. At speeds above 15mph (less than 20mph), the trailer handles just fine. The only time I really felt it is going uphill. The point of connection is well thought out and works with disc brakes. THE BAD: Fabric material is not good. In fact, I think it will begin to rip in the near future (less than 1 year). I've owned this for a couple of months now, and am starting to see signs of wear in the foot area. Getting kids in/out means unsnapping half the canopy (no zippers). My major problem are the restraint straps. They are pretty bad, very thin and no padding. Both my kids get neck marks from the straps (chafing). I used automobile shoulder belt cushions to solve the problem, but the fit isn't quite there and they slide down, exposing the thin strps to their necks again. I'm really considering a Burley to make the kids more comfortable. In this case, you really do get what you pay for. However, if you're on a budget, this will get you started. TIP: I attached a flashing rear bicycle light to the upper tube on the left side to increase visibility without punching a hole in the fabric. Email me for a pic.

We have enjoyed the trailer so far. The shoulder straps are easy to get out of but the lap belt is secure. Overall, we have enjoyed it!
