Our Review of the Compass B530 booster seat

These days, kids go everywhere, and not always in the same car. Parents need a convenient booster that lets children safely ride, whether you or grandma are at the wheel. The Compass B530 Booster Seat offers lightweight portability for busy parents who travel or car pool. Compass booster seats are renowned for design that keeps kids comfy and safe. Premium padding, soft and breathable fabric, and kid friendly features such as cup holders ensure happy car rides.

BENEFITS FOR MOM & DAD

Keep your precious passenger safe in any car thanks to the Compass B530's folding capabilities and light weight. Easy cleaning fabrics help you keep the seat looking tidy. Deluxe comfort features and styles keep the seat fun without being babyish, which means less opposition from kids to staying safely in a booster seat. Safety experts and many states have enacted legislation to keep children in boosters until ages 6-8.

Installation: The Compass B530 installs much like any other belt positioning booster - simply position in the seat you would like your child to ride, and buckle him or her in with the existing vehicle seat belts. The updated belt paths ensure easy installation. The B530 features a headrest that curves forward to accommodate vehicle headrests, which provides a better fit in cars with bucket seats.

Convenience: For families on the go, the B530 folds neatly in half and features a built-in carry handle, a design element that proves especially helpful for carpoolers moving from vehicle to vehicle. Because the back adjusts to 6 height positions, children 38" to 57" tall sit comfortably, allowing the B530 to outlast many children's need for a booster. The carry bag (sold separately) provides extra protection and convenience when traveling with the seat.

BENEFITS FOR JACK OR JILL

Making a booster seat that kids want to sit in is half the battle, and Compass delivers. Rotating armrests allow children to climb in and out independently. Retractable cup holders give children a special spot for their drinks, and the sporty style means kids won't feel like they're riding in the baby seat.

Comfort: Luxurious, fine micro-suede fabrics surround kids with soft comfort while a triple layer of padding makes for trouble-free sitting on long road trips. A taller, higher belt path accommodates children with larger torsos, and a deep supportive back adds extra comfort on the road. EPS foam lined side wings support dozing children and provide protection in the event of an impact.

Safety:

  • Energy absorbing EPS headrests with side wings
  • Meets or exceeds FMVSS 213

Comparisons: The Compass B510 Premier sports similar features to the B530 though certain key differences will help you make a decision. The B510 has a slightly deeper headrest, which is important for Side Impact Protection. However, the B510?s headrest does not curve forward, which presents a challenge in some cars.

Doesn't work in all vans!

Reviewer: Danielle , Grand Rapids, MI Date: July 01, 2008
I was SO EXCITED to get my Compass B530!! When I got it I was still incredibly excited. It was beautiful and very soft and cushy and obviously well made... then I tried to put it in my Dodge Grand Caravan. It did not work with the vehicle seat in the upright position, as needed for safety. I was SO disappointed!!! I called customer support, and although the gentleman was nice, he was not very knowledgeable and simply concluded that the seat would not work in my van. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was... you may want to call customer service before ordering to see if they have any information about whether or not it will work in your particular vehicle.

Impressed!

I drive a van that has bucket seats with headrests that are not removable and do not raise up very high. So, it was very important to me that I get a booster with a headrest that could accomodate them, without pulling away from seats. Initially, I purchased a b505, but found that after I raised the headrests a few notches, my problem returned. I knew I wanted to replace it with a newer compass seat. The big question was whether I should go with the Compass b510 or the b530.

I experienced a lot of confusion regarding the differences between the Compass b510 and the b530. There is almost no information available, except for on car safety message boards. And, what I did find wasn't neccessarily correct. My gut told me that the b530 was the seat for me, but every site I visited said to go with the b510 - because the headrest is deeper. One site even said that the b530 is basically just the b505 with more modern fabric. I even consulted a representative here at elitecarseats.com, who had trouble answering my questions!

So, I ordered a b530, held onto my b505 and borrowed a b510 from a friend. When the b530 arrived, I lined them up next to each other and compared them. I have seen the three of them right next to each other- and I'm pretty sure I can answer all of the questions regarding the b530 that anyone might have. So, here goes:

Does the compass b530 have the new and improved belt path? YES!

Does the Compass b530 have the new and improved headrest that curves forward to accomodate vehicle headrests? YES!

Which is deeper, the headrest on the b530 or the b510? The headrest on the b510 is deeper, it's true. The newer b530 has a slightly more shallow headrest. However, it is still a very deep and safe eps foam-lined headrest. The difference appeared to be 3/4 of an inch at best. It is a HUGE improvement on the b505 (it is also a much longer headrest, height-wise) and is significantly nicer/deeper the vast majority of booster seats available on the market!

The Compass b530 is an amazingly nice seat. The fabric is high-quality and the seat is as comfortable as a booster can be. It can accomodate larger children, but still manages to cradle average-sized kids as well.

I am very pleased with this seat and so is my son. My only complaint is the lack of information available about the specific seat. I was really afraid of the b530 after reading that the headrest was not as deep, but am completely satisfied with the seat in real life. I wish I'd bought it sooner.

This was my first purchase from this website and the service and shipping time was excellent! Very professional and knowledgable staff! I was recently in a car accident w/ my children in the car. They were both in the britax marathons - which worked superb. But, my daughter is a very tall 6 year old so I started my search for a booster. I liked britax and considered their boosters - but she didn't seem too thrilled with the deep wings and I feared she would always peek out and therefore not doing what it is supposed to do. The compass 530 was a good choice for us. Folds nicely for storage or transport, easy to install, COMFY!, and love the new look too! My daughter loves it and it seems very durable (compared to the boosters I saw at most stores) and a great price too. It also has a great height adjustment too - with no funny gap. We love it!
