Our Review of the Britax Frontier toddler car seat

The Britax Frontier Toddler Car Seat allows parents to keep their children secure in a 5-point harness for as long as possible. Suitable for kids at least 25 lbs, 2 years of age, and 30" tall, the Frontier from Britax is best for parents graduating their little ones from a convertible car seat. Why such a high starting weight and age? Britax's commitment to best safety practices encourages parents to keep babies rear-facing as long as possible; to lower the limits would accomplish the opposite goal. Once junior grows out of the harness, the Frontier converts to a belt-positioning booster suitable for kids up to 100 lbs.

BENEFITS FOR MOM & DAD

While still a larger seat, the Britax Frontier is not as big as the popular Britax Regent. The smaller size delivers the added benefits of an 80 lb harness, plus a booster up to 100 lbs, while allowing a better car fit than the larger Regent. Convenient features such as the no-thread harness adjuster help keep frustrations to a minimum.

Installation: The Britax Frontier installs two ways: as a 5-point harness booster and as a belt-positioning booster. Push button LATCH connectors let you install the car seat quickly, simply, and tightly. LATCH may be used for installation as a booster at any weight range. Color coded belt guides ensure proper positioning of the seat belts when used as belt-positioning booster.

With the release of the Frontier, some owners report issues with installation. Parents are encouraged to read the instruction manual. Tips and tricks to keep in mind:

  1. Position the 'recline block' before installation based on whether you will use the seat with the harness or as a belt-positioning booster.
  2. To alleviate difficulty with installation, Britax includes supplementary instructions with information on a short belt path and long belt path method.
  3. Always use Tether with installation for children weighing 65 - 80 lbs.

Convenience: The high harness weight limit (80 lbs) is the defining benefit of the Frontier, allowing you to keep junior as safe as possible. Get kids in and out of the seat with ease thanks to the lifting armrests. Readjust the harness and head rest height with little effort. Fitting children up to 80 lbs, the Frontier keeps junior protected, longer. Plus, the built in booster seat means this seat is very likely the last your child will need.  Although incorporating a higher weight capacity harness and high back booster in one seat is a great bang for your buck, the high minimums mean that you can't go straight from an infant car seat to the frontier. That said, the Frontier remains a safer 3rd car seat than your standard high back booster because of the 80 lbs harness capacity.

BENEFITS FOR JACK OR JILL

Precious passengers are most secure when they remain in a 5-point harness. With an 80 lb harness weight limit, the Frontier protects well. When Jack or Jill grows out of the 5-point harness, the seat converts to a high back belt-positioning booster that still delivers true side-impact protection (TSIP). Kid-friendly bonuses such as cup holders and armrests keep passengers happy.

Comfort: Kids love sitting in the Frontier because they have their very own seat. Adjustable armrests give them a place to put their hands. Lift the armrests and little ones scramble in and out on their own. Cup holders provide a spot for juice. Generous cushioning and breathable fabrics ensure maximum comfort on the next family road-trip. An adjustable crotch strap and an easily adjustable harness and headrest provide a customized fit for growing children. The HUGS Harness cushions the neck and just.

Safety:

  • 5-point harness
  • Meets or exceeds FMVSS 213
  • HUGS Harness Ultra Guard System reduces forward head movement
  • True Side Impact Protection

Comparisons: For a toddler car seat with the same 80 lb harness weight limit and a more secure fit for larger children, the Britax Regent Toddler Car Seat provides comparable comfort and safety.  For a convertible car seat with a matching 80 lbs harness capacity, check out the Sunshine Kids Radian 80.

Not difficult w/ Latch

5
Reviewer: Nicole , Columbus, OH Date: May 14, 2008
After reading all of the reviews concerning the difficult installation I feel like I should write a review! I found the installation with the LATCH method to be even more simple that the install of my previous Britax car seats! Now, I cannot address other kinds of installation, but LATCH took me about 5 minutes. Seriously. The car seat is very solid and fits the seat nicely. The height adjustments are really cool and easy to do. I've had it less than 24 hours, so I can't say whether my child loves it or not, but concerning installation it was a breeze. I hope this helps others who are considering this car seat.

We love it!

We love and, more importantly, our daughter loves her new carseat. Thanks to the negative reviews in the beginning regarding installation, we anticipated it being difficult. So when we actually installed it, it wasn't too bad. But we love it and feel really good since we trust Britax and know it's the best seat out there. We really love it

Overall A Good Seat

Reviewer: Anonymous , Albany, New York Date: May 02, 2008
We purchased two of the Britax Frontier car seats and are very happy with the quality. Yes, the installation was a little trying. The instructions need to be more specific, thanks to the other comments and helpful tips in the reviews we were able to get a solid install with the latch system in our Volvo. Let me say again, it took some patience from two highly educated people, both with master's degrees, to figure out this install. The only other major complaint I have with this car seat is the care of the cover. After two days in our car, my two year old spilled an entire container of milk on the seat. In order to clean this cover, the entire seat needs to be removed. This is a problem, considering the length of time it takes for the install. Overall, so far a great seat, but there are some drawbacks.

Read the PDF Installation Tips!

Reviewer: Anonymous , Auburn Hills, MI Date: April 28, 2008
We bought this car seat for my youngest daughter who is 3 years old. It was a perfect fit for her, well made, sturdy, and comfortable. When we got it, it was first released. No one had a review on it or even tried installing the seat yet. My husband and myself are intelligent people with college under our belts. I consider myself well-informed, and I research things thoroughly. In other words, we are not idiots who can not read (as an anonymous reviewer from Bay St. Louis stated). However, after reading the manual we could not get the seat installed. We tried every position in our 2000 Taurus. Note we can not/did not use the latch as our car does not have that option. Using the seat belt was our only option. An option that was not working. The following Tuesday, my husband took the car seat to a certified safety inspector. (one who has an engineering degree so not dumb herself). She could not get the seat to install either. We called Elite Car Seats to arrange to return the car seat. Friday, Britax issues a PDF of installation tips. Thank goodness we did not return the seat yet. We tried installing the seat using the long belt path (LBP). Originally, we had the seat behind the passenger seat. The seat belt was too short to use in the LBP method. We tried the center. Again, too short. Lastly, we tried installing behind the drivers side. Success! It now takes us less than 15 minutes to install. We can only use it in one position (outboard driver's side) but it is a quick and easy install there. Needless to say, we are keeping the seat and are very happy with it. Just be sure to research to ensure a good fit in your own car. http://car-seat.org/ forums have been instrumental to helping us install and keep this seat! new tips from britax

Reviewer: Anonymous , usa, usa Date: April 27, 2008
due to the overwhelming reponse on the tough install using short belt path, britax has now issued the long belt path option - http://www.britaxusa.com/documents/FrontierInstallationTips.pdf.  This pretty much takes all negative feedback away from the frontier... you should almost always get a solid install using long belt path if you can't get one using short belt path.

A Different Install...but a Great Seat

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Raleigh, NC Date: April 27, 2008
This is my 3rd Britax car seat so you would think that the Frontier would install just like all of the others. Not the case. Not until I came up to the computer to read the reviews was I able to install the Britax Frontier tightly. The LATCH belt is where it is on all the others when it arrives in the box. The isssue is that you have to rethread it through the FRONT of the car sear and pull the straps through the FRONT of the seat, not the side like every other seat that I had. Once I did that it fit nice and tight. I think that the instructions should be a little more clear. Thanks to all of you who wrote in. I was about to pack it up and send it back but with all of the feedback on this site I was able to get it in and I am very happy! I am afraid that if Britax doesn't improve the instructions there are going to be many more frustrated parents.

Rock Solid install with Long Belt Path

4
Reviewer: Stacy , North Carolina Date: April 26, 2008
I origninally did not like this seat b/c of the installation issues I was faced with. However, after Britax issued the installation updates yesterday on their website approving a long belt path installation, I got a rock solid perfect installation on the first try. My daughter loves her new seat and it is a much nicer size than the Regent which is just a little bit too big in my opinion. I'm giving four stars b/c I still find it difficult to get a solid install using just latch, even though I followed the directions and pulled the straps through the belt path slots. That's the way it is on the Regent, and I was always able to get a solid install on the Regent using latch. I might be ordering a second Frontier once I determine if I can get a decent install in my husband's truck. For those considering purchasing this carseat, I would definitely recommend buying the return shipping insurance just in case you aren't able to get a good install.

Britax Rocks!!

5
Reviewer: Jody , New Castle, PA Date: April 26, 2008
Please do not make the same mistake I made. I purchased this car seat and returned it because I could not get a good fit. I thought I read the instruction booklet (boy was I wrong!) After seeing other reviews on how to install it I finally realized I was doing everything wrong. You MUST pull the LATCH straps through the middle of the seat (move the fabric or pull it towards you.)DO NOT pull the latch straps on the side of the seat (it will NEVER fit tight.)I have a Marathon, Decathalon and Regent and the Frontier installs totally different than any of them. Once I realized my mistake I re-ordered this seat and now I have a rock solid seat (We have a F150 Crew Cab). Britax was right on with this seat. Thank you Britax for caring for our kids as much as we do!

It's Just Different!

Reviewer: Anonymous , Marietta, GA Date: April 25, 2008
I do agree that it is a different install, but they probably had to do something different because of the large variation of size that it accommodates. I was able to contact the customer service group at Britax and they gave me some very helpful tips for my specific vehicle. I love the fact that the base is more contour to my vehicle rather than the rigidity of the other Britax seats. I actually ended up getting a better fit than my Boulevard.
