Our Review of the Britax Diplomat convertible car seat

The Britax Diplomat convertible car seat is a smaller version of the Britax Boulevard. It offers the same general features and Side Impact Protection as the deluxe Britax Boulevard convertible seat, but with a lower max weight capacity, seat height, and seat width than the Boulevard. The Diplomat provides top notch Britax safety and comfort for your child, even in the back of a 'lil Mini Cooper.

  • Works in rear facing position from 5 to 35 lbs
  • Works in forward facing position from 20 to 40 lbs

BENEFITS FOR MOM AND DAD

In addition to the easy to use LATCH installation system, safety belt lock-offs, and one handed recline adjustment, the Britax Diplomat has convenience features like a quick adjust harness and removable, washable fabrics. Since the Diplomat is relatively small, fit should not be an issue, no matter how small your back seat.

INSTALLATION

In both its forward and rear facing positions, the Britax Diplomat uses a flexible LATCH system for installation, or your vehicle's safety belts. The LATCH tethers have push-button releases for easier installs and removals, and the addition of the Britax Versa-Tether provides additional head protection for children over 30 lbs. If you prefer to install your car seat using the vehicle's safety belts, the Diplomat is equipped with built-in lock-offs to hold the belt in place once the car seat is properly positioned.

The Britax Diplomat is one of few convertible seats with a top-tether for a solid fit in the rear facing position. Very few convertible seats have the option of using a top tether while rear-facing.

CONVENIENCE

The Diplomat offers great parent oriented conveniences like a one-handed recline adjustment, belt lock-offs, washable fabrics, and the unique Britax Versa-Tether system the enables you to do a full LATCH install in both the forward and rear facing positions. The Diplomat's tangle-free harness is especially convenient, as it adjusts without rethreading.

BENEFITS FOR JACK OR JILL

In the rear facing positiong, the Diplomat reclines for better relaxation during long rides, and adjusts with just one hand. It does not recline while forward facing. The Diplomat's removable infant insert pillow and Side Impact Protection side-wings provide additional comfort and security for infants and toddlers.

COMFORT

The Britax Diplomat is lined with thick, plush, and washable padding that is extra soft and not the least bit scratchy. The tangle-free harness straps are secure but not stiff, and there is padding around the main buckle and shoulder straps for extra comfort.

SAFETY

The Britax Diplomat, like the larger Boulevard, offers what the manufacturer refers to as "True Side Impact Protection". The deep, padded wings at either side of the Diplomat's headrest and torso area are lined with EPS and comfort foam for additional protection in the event of a side impact collision.

The 5-point harness of the Britax Diplomat car seat is made of a durable, tangle free polyester webbing that fits snuggly over your child's shoulders and hips.

COMPARISON

The 'go-between' nature of the Britax Diplomat, for kids up to 40 lbs, means it does not have the full weight capacity of the larger Britax Boulevard. If you have the room in your vehicle, and want a seat that with all the safety features of the Diplomat PLUS a harness capacity of 65 lbs, you should seriously consider the Britax Boulevard.

Very Nice!

I a very happy with this car seat as it works well with smaller children and smaller cars. Other "compact" models just didn't seem to match up to the Britax. If you are looking for a compact convertible seat, this may work well for you.

Too Small...Boulevard is better.

Reviewer: J. Patridge , College Station, TX Date: March 12, 2008
The Britax Diplomat seemed like the right option for our family, but was ultimately too small. For the last three years we have owned a Marathon and have been very pleased. We recently purchased the Diplomat only to learn that it was really too small. My second son is 23lbs at 11 months and fits snugly inside the seat but it is clear that it won't last as long as I would like. I would prefer to make just one expensive car seat investment, so I decided to exchange the Diplomat for its slightly larger brother the Boulevard, which we love. Also, the seatbelt clips on the side are not as sturdy as the previous model's and one of the clips was broken when it arrived.

Perfect Fit Rear Facing

4
Reviewer: Anonymous , Denver, CO Date: March 05, 2008
We are using the seat with our 7 month old, rear facing. He is just tall enough, 11 inches seated to shoulder which is the Britax guideline. Overall very happy with the seat. I had it inspected and no problems in our Ford Taurus X. My husband is very tall, so I was worried that when he put the driver seat back it would hit the car seat - that does not happen. Easy to install and use. My son's legs just brush up against the back seat, the inspector said that in a collision this is not a safety concern.

A Good Alternative to Boulevard

5
Reviewer: M, W & H's Mummy , Dallas, TX Date: February 22, 2008
I'm really pleased with this seat. We have the Boulevard for each of our twins, but purchased the Diplomat for our youngest because the Boulevard is HUGE. I read one of the other comments that stated that the straps tangle easily and it looked as though Britax may have cut costs with this seat compared to the Roundabout, but I don't feel like this is true of the Boulevard. Yes, the guides that keep the straps in place are not available with the Diplomat, but I always found them to be more of a hindrance than a help with the Boulevard anyway. I haven't had any tangling issues with the straps of the Diplomat. Another commenter was disappointed that the seat was too short for her child. The seat is clearly a smaller seat than other Britax convertibles, and height guidelines indicate this. My son is a large ten months (32" and 24 lbs.) and hasn't outgrown this seat. We're really happy with this purchase. I don't think that we'll have to run out and buy a new seat for him any time soon.

It's Okay

Reviewer: Anonymous , Conroe, TX Date: February 13, 2008
My daughter is only 7 months old and looks like she almost to big to ride rear facing in it. So we may have to buy a new seat before her first birthday. Also, the latch between the legs looks really uncomfortable because it cuts into her legs. I don't feel that we will get our monies worth out of this seat.

As good as Roundabout?

3
Reviewer: Anonymous , Denver, CO Date: February 04, 2008
I did a lot of research and became sold on Britax because of the features that are always touted...safety, comfort, design. I chose the Diplomat over the Roundabout based on the side impact extras. However, I am left wondering if Britax included the same features in the straps/buckles of the Diplomat as they do in the Roundabout. I find that the straps of the Diplomat tangle often, that the buckles are difficult to both engage and disengage, and that installation was not as easy as expected. Did Britax cut costs on the straps and buckles for the Diplomat?

Diplomat Convertible Car Seat

Reviewer: Anonymous , Troutville, VA Date: December 27, 2007
The seat is very plush. It is large enough for my grandson to sit comfortably and fits nicely in my small SUV. I like all the safety features and the ease of operation. It fits in my daughters compact car, but because it's only a 2 door car she can't get the baby in and out of the seat easily in the backward seating position. Of course we would have this problem with any car seat. I am very pleased with the car seat.

Height limits too low

4
Reviewer: Claudia , Stamford, CT Date: November 07, 2007
According to Britax, the Diplomat can be used as follows: rear facing 5-35 lbs, standing 22"-33", shoulder height while sitting 11"-15". Forward facing 20-40 lbs, standing height 27"-40", shoulder height while sitting 12"-15". As a reference, the Roundabout can be used rear facing to 33 lbs, then forward facing to 40 lbs. No height limits are given, however. I wish they had this seat when I bought my Roundabout. We looked into it as a 2nd car seat. However, this seat will be outgrown too quickly for my son who's long and skinny - as a reference, an average child will be 21 months when they hit 33". The Boulevard is a better option for taller infants if you can fit it rear facing in you car, as the seat will likely be outgrown by height long before it is outgrown by weight.

Great

5
Reviewer: Stacey , Mendham, NJ Date: October 02, 2007
I really like this car seat. I like that it is more compact for rear facing than the Boulevard. Also, the wings seem to go out at more of an angle on this one. My 9 month old is very comfortable in it. Sleeps well, no head drooping. His head rests nicely against the wings when he falls asleep. Easy to install and very secure. Even if I don't get as much life out of it as I would have the Boulevard, I'm very happy with it. The Boulevard was just too huge in my car rear facing. (I drive a Mazda CX-9.)
